When do you start pregnancy swimming?
Most women start pregnancy swimming from 12 weeks. That said, you can also begin taking swimming lessons right from the start of your pregnancy. As your pregnancy progresses in particular, it is a good idea to give your body and joints some rest in the water.
The upward pressure of the water takes the strain off your spine and your other joints. That makes it easier to move, even late in pregnancy. As long as you feel well, you can keep swimming right up to the birth.
Pregnancy swimming exercises
During the pregnancy swimming lessons you are offered a range of exercises that build your stamina, strengthen your muscles, benefit your posture, stimulate your circulation and your breathing — and that are wonderfully relaxing too.
So thanks to the swimming and relaxation exercises you do not only keep working on your fitness. You also make sure that:
Your physical condition, blood circulation and muscle function improve;
You work consciously on your breathing and relaxation;
You are aware of your posture and your movements;
You can prevent and ease aches and pains.
Swimming after the birth
Would you like to carry on moving in the water after the birth? You can often take up various sports again after just six weeks, and swimming is a very safe option.
Listen carefully to your body and build it up gently, of course. Come along to lane swimming at Merwestein, for example. There are several lanes, so everyone can swim at their own pace.
Would you like to come swimming together with your baby? That is possible too! At Merwestein, babies from 6 weeks old can already take special baby swimming lessons, so they can get used to the water. Come and splash, sing and play games together! Read more about baby and toddler swimming.
