Verbindion has completely redeveloped sports and events complex Merwestein and made it more sustainable. Our complex is now ready for the future and we can offer a wider range of sports in Nieuwegein. The work ran from the autumn of 2023 up to and including August 2026.
The old complex was dated and no longer met today's (sustainability) requirements. Merwestein now has a new, double sports hall as well as several multifunctional rooms. The swimming area has been extended and there are new changing rooms, a new café and a new entrance. The roofs, façades and window frames have all been fully insulated.

Alongside the visible improvements, the complex has been made ready for the future. We generate a large share of the energy we need ourselves, partly with solar panels on the roof. The façade has a green appearance and rainwater from the roofs is collected, cleaned and reused. The heat from the water for the showers is recovered as well.

Slangen + Koenis Architecten designed the building, Burgland Bouw was the main contractor for the project, Hellebrekers Water & Leisuretechniek delivered the technical installations, Treem is supervising the building process and Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners designed the outdoor area.
The project is co-financed by the European Union.
